The mission of Coordinated School Health is to improve students’ health and their capacity to learn through the support of families, communities and schools.  The physical, social and emotional health of students can support or hinder their academic success and prospects for a productive and healthy life.

The CDC’s Coordinated School Health (CSH) Model is a systematic approach that ensures that a school community effectively links health with educational success through eight components.

1.  Health Education
2.  Physical Education
3.  Health Services
4.  Nutrition Services
5.  Counseling and Psychological Services
6.  Healthy School Environment
7.  Health Promotion for Staff
8.  Family/Community Involvement

LSSD in collaboration with Community Progress Committee, Inc. (a local non-profit organization) applied for and received a $500,000 equipment grant from the federal government through HRSA: School-Based Health Center Capital (SBHCC) Program to fully equip school-based health centers in our district with telemedicine.

Telemedicine utilizes state of the art technology to assist our district in attending to the needs of its students. The telemedicine connection is a secure, two-way video link with the child and the school nurse on one end, and a medical provider on the other.  During a telemedicine visit, a child can be screened, examined, diagnosed, treated and monitored.  Special equipment gives the medical provider the ability to examine the child’s ears, eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, etc. Based on the availability and discretion of a LSSD school nurse, a child can be seen through telemedicine for concerns such as: cuts/abrasions, rashes, pink eye, coughs/cold, strep throat, earaches, and/ or flu-like symptoms.  The Doctor’s Office, LLC, under the direction of Dr. Wayne Wells will serve as the primary base site for primary care telemedicine services.

Once the appropriate paperwork is completed by parents, all students enrolled in the LSSD are eligible to be seen at the SBHC’s. Service fees will be billed by commercial insurance (BlueCross, United Health, etc.) as well as TennCare or CoverKids coverage. For students without insurance, services will be provided on a sliding scale based on your income information, with a minimal charge for lab services. No child will be denied service with appropriate parental permission.
