Lebanon Special School District February Board Meeting

Fincher I have to Winfree Bryant student and a Byars Dowdy student board members parents and students today with son before you to discuss a matter that has becoming a growing concern for a school communities and gun safety as you are aware on February 3rd 2023 I stood a loaded firearm to her school Winfrey Bryan these alarming event serves as a reminder that we must take action to ensure the safety well-being of our students unfortunately this student had access to a firearm for approximately 7 hours and then another student alerted the staff at dismissal this highlights the need for improved measurements to prevent answers to quirk in the future no child should ever have to feed for their safety in a place where they should feel protected and secure their school teachers should not be expected to Bear the responsibility or because they're putting their lives on the line to protect the children from gun violence they should be able to focus on teaching without they the added worry of potential facing a dangerous situation at the community we have a responsibility to provide a safety and secured learning environment for our students I know we have to take measures to secure school but it is cleaner than we do we should do moths to prevent incidents from this to and again the state of Tennessee has a gun ownership per household of 51.6% in our city of Lebanon there approximately 13957 households which means. almost 7,000 of those households in the city have a gun this underscores the importance on implementing measures to ensure that guns are not brought in our schools and in their daily lives of our students unfortunately according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is school crimes and firearms in the state had pricing from 71 in 2020 to 162 in 2021 I'll have the report for 2022 jet but these alarm in 10 highlights the need for immediate action to encase gun safety in our schools is the root cause of gun violence and work to educate our students and communities on the dangers of guns are students about gun safety providing resources for those struggling with mental health issues and continuing to promote a culture of kindness and compassion in our schools we are proposing that we take Edition steps to enhance gun safety in our schools this could include implementing metal detectors acquiring weapon detecting dogs and or working with local law enforcement to ensure that they are prepared to respond quickly in an emergency situation I've been in contact with several companies that train and provide weapon detecting dogs and handlers for schools one of these companies is already working in another Tennessee school district and that school district is starting their program and the 2024 school year these companies are ready and willing to speak with our school district about their options we would like to add that there are various grants available each year that help schools pay for school safety programs we have another parent in our community who has extensive grant writing experience in his to help apply for Grants on the school's behalf or work with the staff member assigned to grant writing currently should they requested and be willing to provide the necessary information additionally we would like to request more open line of follow-up communication between School in the parents when issues like this occur just an initial notification is not enough bringing parents into the loop on any updates and further actions being taken allows us to speak with our children and reduce the amount of rumors spreading about the situation conclusion we are going to join us and taking action to enhance our gun safety in our schools the safety and well-being of our students and staff should be our top priority and is up to us to ensure that they are protected thank you now all gravy it's not fair for a kid to be go to school scared but you know I don't have grandkids in the system also an hour because you never know when what their basement home and what causes them I don't think they do it intentionally I think of down times two say that in their environment and maybe bring it to us and I'm sure there's a lot of parents will sink you know when I'll I'll just shoot him if he keeps up I get that mentality call Keith can get them in town. So that's that's why I landed reason why you should not do it if you have problems this is how it should be addressed can we try to get that all week I think we've done a pretty good job on getting out of the day on when that happened it went through Bryant we want y'all to know we don't want you deserve to know your fiance you deserve to know that and you know the metal detectors I have no idea what something like that cost then when the communication with the community the school because we SSundee's house and the people that did you contacting somebody or not I said local authorities or is that a service or what the United States sometime go in and just do random checks that's that's what they doing a very safe and reliable and actually the dogs dogs on earth no, not having one at school every day everybody and then do it randomly so these days in here 3 hours cast of the company we haven't any did you check on the cost of that or no depending on who you use but they are we just didn't get further into that because they have to know like how many schools are we looking at naughty dogs are we you know wanting to 55,000 initial cause of the dark and there that I we had was a dog bite training an SRO officer that's already there and there was a thing with all these as a community we can build this for the best the best companies around here and say okay you going to be the sponsor of this dog gets ER the bed from the corner but I'm either one so I'm sure a lot of community would want to we are the best and it's actually promoting service for because that's going to be costly so there are a lot of up front but then just maintaining them it's not like has an idea and I mean obviously the more that we had the better but at least if we only had if we can only start with one of the dogs and rotate and not getting ready to release the schedule to the public this is the day but if the kids are familiar with the dog and they knew that any day the dog is going to be at their school after we discuss with the board and stuff with willing to chair this committee to get paper to write exactly cuz some of the some of the companies that provide the dogs actually will grant the dog you have to fly to New York good thing we're thinking these are good kids go here for middle school and then they go to Hawaii I think this will be a community at 4 because I want to make sure when they go high school they're safe I don't want to know that he's going to be here when there were these three four five years in here we want to make it for the whole County y I think that don't you're mighty right presentation I'm needs to be done and I don't know what to do think we're lucky to be in you know we don't want app and it happens every day that they have so much that they don't even talk about it cuz it happens every day. so you know and I've got something that will prevent to do with the end of the thing that about guns and stuff about to keep them stored away and all this kind of stuff and we're going to discuss that at the end of the day does send out to every parent in the whole District right now and let me know how important this is to not leave your dad gum gun laying on the kitchen counter really If the parents are not doing the job at home then it's cool unfortunately won't have to do that job and trained then I say okay you see this this is what you don't do this is where you because I mean sometimes at school seems to be the place where the kids are going to be learning you know and you're right I mean she's not there she's there to teach the kids they're not there to be scared and the teacher don't she don't need to be scared break something is going to happen and I'm sure they fear that every single day I really do and if you have any child they all have their own plan on what they would do and none of us I do not have to worry about that we didn't have you should have left yeah you know they have like ideas of where they're going to hide and there's just classrooms like above and beyond with their being trained and it's scary when you ask them or they'll just start and they act like it's an everyday normal when will PAX East Moline thank you so much thank you. The more appreciation week this was back in January and Tilton we got several gifts for you all and then from the different schools but from me to our school board members that are here thank you we're about six months then as far as my start here and I appreciate your support appreciate your patience from our schools they appreciate your service of coordinate so just know you're very very well appreciated and I believe our board members have a nation job and you know I'm just cutest gun fantastic. Kurtz and I director of operations which got several things within our safety items in our plans some of the things we can't discuss publicly but now that's a priority and we appreciate that too will continue to work together to make it better to Revenue expenditure summary we discussed was slightly below and our local option sales tax but we are doing well and our property tax we got we envisioned it will be in good shape and that teaching and learning update briefly got some exciting data to share for my students I've made a copy of our reading and Olay Universal screener data as it's coming up and it shows ranking in that at this time and you can say that our growth is tremendous the worst thing a lot of growth in reading and math when there are Pockets that you know will work on but we're saying a lot of grass so I just want to share that with you and you can take that we also had February 6th October are teachers came together to create our common formative assessment and I know it's a very successful day we were able to create all benchmarks for next year and teachers working together and got set for next year based on the thank you very much gentlemen oats grass will make you cross-eyed just know they let me know what party Sears have a tribute at 2 Fam I'm being so much better and scale every school also has high quality Christian that we AR reading and we're seeing a lot of growth in Austin third right thing yes sir you news on it you don't think it's going to go away so many people around like right now we have that long so we gave our mom to text nut we're planning accordingly we are looking now at the number of teachers we need and we're getting pretty close to a the retest dates are May 30th to June 5th for any 3rd grader that needs to retake that test for free it will take the test then we'll have to take I don't I mean it's hard to determine right now exactly how many will you may have 30% maybe that will qualify that will take it so we'll just choose to do and how many sign is how many you think will be retained Argo would be zero so well at this point let's just say a guesstimate 125 students some of those will go out some of them will retest what we want to do is make sure we have a slot in a summer school or tutoring so they do not have to be retained and it did y'all say we're going to have to do that at Crisco weight belt Muskogee graders to Rising 8th graders so that's who we would have to include this year in our summer camp program that number includes 8th graders Rising 8th graders the rising that hundred and $25 I got your card. So what am I dumb people with teachers how many can you have in a classroom is that going to be limited or not Staybridge require us to have somewhere and how many here and going through so we have some that have it is paid in upstate paid him to come in to teach the we have teachers who volunteer administrators to be the principal and administrators of the schools will have the nurses will have how many weeks freedom in motion no it's funny brother Stein every minute if you don't have want to have a lot of thing I mean really the art teachers love at mr. Jones they can't wait I said lot of them are excited cuz it's a smaller class size they just do a different grade level and some preciate that extra funds if you got to keep going off College it's a good it's good to you and what you want on that we have a material that we have in our does note mandated that you got to use tokens on you tonight or something I know I've had a lot of talk about controversy with people talking about it and I don't like it how's your kid can have a horrible horrible live at home and he can have a horrible life before he takes the test the next morning he probably hadn't had anything to eat or he's been really bad that night and him coming whatever so I think that's not fair that's the way I feel about it what now what are they going to be retested after the summer school and the state will determine what adequate growth would look like as a parent China news we had parent those with the schools and who hosted tonight they also have and great parents were given priority to come in teachers were given additional time we had two rooms covered so they could start earlier like at 12 and have those parent meetings and we feel like I talk to the principal today and she said and they were able to talk to almost all of the parents they had two or three that made appointments for later day and they're going to come in and talk to them about the new all and those students Texas. you think I don't know so I just come in times more people go in front of it. we don't but a lot of people you know I'm playing next April 10th we hear again and no other business that I have I thank all of you for coming thank you two ladies for y'all's presentation it was fantastic and we really appreciate it was really do thanks courage for you to do that it ready.
