Lebanon Special School District April Board Meeting

message mr. Jones with one addition to our other business that may properly come for the board that we have guessed it would like to speak with mr. Jones we have is going to give us a tutorial over our process lengthy process with a lot options and then puts Odessa Thompson Place and that involved teachers from each grade level represent grade level representing the school as well as interventionist and we had this year to parents on from representing early crazy person in middle school has only served to students representative Middle School we had a really good committee worked really hard they looked at samples throughout the year and use their stateroom to evaluate each of the vendors they attended for the it's on each vendor for after school for an hour and were able to ask questions and look at the material and they also taught the standards using the different materials or side with that so they really got us through understanding what was good together and marks and there was a committee meeting as a arrived at the best material for us which is McGraw-Hill and they are high-quality instruction materials for all pee great and so what you have in your packet is a textbook proposal for 6 years adoption for McGraw-Hill all K-8 and that is good that it's for all grades because that gives us continuity with crispy vocabulary from year to year four kids and it is a blended and digital package there are so many villages out of there for teachers who needs them and we also have to phrase of algebra and this year a first-year one class of geometry so that is also in the package there it is a total of 687500 $29 it is a lot of money but we're buying books for all our students when they were in that range but this was not be hired again it is so this is for six years they are consumable. then we will get those new can come over each year at cost of shipping his already in there so we won't have a digital shipping each year as well well we will take them up. that we have they were considerable also so they thought most of them have been used but there are a few left over that we could use a summer camp or however we need to good before we didn't have the same Christmas Milwaukee weather McGraw-Hill is different ones no question the name Lance What shipping we will pay for the other years used for 6 years old and I will come back and before that would do another year for you come to that too so you guys can come over and then come each year for six years the only one that isn't on the six-year contract is geometry because we don't know what we want to eat but we have to pay all this I'll be happy to hear correctly have it in our paycheck which is great news it does provide for a but for all our citizens. will provide for students as we get more Frozen each year as well numotion I like mostly except the math textbook mr. as we're moving forward I first wanted to talk to you for a moment about summer school save new information on Thursday with our funding and guidelines coming down they've adjusted somebody so you could see some of the timeline is different they have told us if they're going to give it data on May 19th which would be early scores to let us know the students that are not proficient on the t cap test the original date was May 26th to let us know proficiency this proficiency will not tell us if they're approaching or below it'll just know they're not at MIT expectacion so we know they're below proficient the final proficiency score will come out May 26th just as they said before but it could give us early notice of those who are in that bloke looking at that so we're hopeful that we can before my parents a little bit earlier before school's out and be able to do that another day that changed they moved up the date for taking the T cat breed test so our students that fall in that below and approaching category if they want to retake that tkip test their able to retake the test and will be able to do that before school's out so we can possibly start as early as May 20th to give a retest for the children that she's that option there is a in the packet that I gave you you'll see well if they are approaching they could appeal look at their Universal screener scores and if they've had high screener scores then they would be promoted on to the fourth grade so there are different options that fall for those children so it may benefit them to not retain but to choose one of the options that they have available in that second packet if you look there are two columns and it gives you the option so if they're an approaching proficiency student they could retake the test they can apply Court appeal they can attend summer school where they could choose to have to drink in 4th grade for the full year so they have for options to move forward on some of that I'm looking at what we have so those are the four options if they are approaching that they could and if they attend summer school you know with that they would have to attend 90% of the time and show out of that grows in the approaching category but if you just that God you can say they are the options that we have we did send out her letters to our parents inviting all the students that had qualifying scores on our Universal screener assessment to invite them to Summer do they have the option to sign up as of 3 today we had about 80 to students register for summer school 61 of those were 3rd graders that have already register for summer school we had a fourth graders seven fifth graders for 6th graders and only to 7th graders right now and we asked if they could have those in by next week next Friday so that's what we were hoping for but we will have that window open students can sign up for summer school and just eat it once that they would want to Total that attended Joshua do you remember the exact total I don't remember it's probably about 2 100 300 we invited 625 students that had the qualifying scores as being a priority student not just third graders but for the other there's also legislation in process right now to include are rising 1st through 9th grade so it would add to the numbers that we have for summer school we did send out a request for all grade levels to teach I'm an interest survey of who would like to teach summer school so we do have a bank of teachers and we are able to feel all of those if we do have those children come if that is past I'll let you know so we'll be okay with the number of tea nearest we have that planned right now we have classrooms set we will have the Elementary at Coles Ferry will have the middle school students 5 through 8 at Walter J Baird so we have two schools close proximity and it will be easier for transportation feeding schedules and everything that we need to do so we have a lot of plans already made and on the way to having that ready to start as soon as School's Out for our summer school for students and we were pleasantly surprised with the number of teachers that wanted to be a part of that we have ta that are a part of that will have different ones in charge so we will have administrative in the schools will have security we have everything that you know we would offer during the school Day lunch is provided materials will be provided so we'll have all of the things that the students need for their summer school I did submit a waiver on Thursday I have last week to ask that we have our summer school for 4 days a week instead of 5 for that for a week. So we would go Monday through Thursday instead of Monday through Friday and that's an allowable favor that we can ask for so we have asked for last year we were approved for that waiver and we hope that we could have it again it gives the teachers one day off in our day is a little bit longer we're an hour longer than we would have to be it requires a 6 hour day in our students are going to normalcy 750 day to 250 like now just to keep it consistent and so we do build up some extra time so we're hoping that will be approved and it's not approved yet but we just submitted so hopefully that will come through it but we do feel good about where we are with that we have approximately 45 teachers right now that are assigned to classes but we feel good about what we have with that also wanted to share some of our testing information we start next April 17th and I thought you had wanted schedule, what we're doing we do have some they come in and monitor and go through Proctor for us so we are starting on Monday with me English language arts portion of the test April 17th we are required by the state to start with Eli and all of that has to be it back by the end of the week so we will test that first week with English language arts we will ship all of those materials to the state department in will begin the other subject in the other grades and especially third grade they are asking that we try to get that ship as quickly as he and go ahead and ship before even if you have some absent let's go ahead and send that back in so that we have that we tried to spread it out too so they're not tested overly you know in one day too much so we tried to spread that out too so it wouldn't be disruptive to the entire day of school so we'll have normal school day after testing our second grade through fifth grade will have a paper-based test this year and as we always have that our middle school students will test online this is the first year since about 78 years ago that we tried the online testing across the state of Tennessee so all six through eight trailer in the state of Tennessee will test online for all subjects and then our eocs are online if they have finished Town we're going to work going to work we are preparing our students practice with somebody online test portions of that going to the site making sure all Chromebooks worked we've had technology a testing what needs to take place but we feel like we're in a good spot to begin are testing all mature bills are in the assistant principals typically run the testing for the schools they have all of their materials they are sorting them out and getting ready for our students to start next week if you guys one other item I skipped over I didn't want to make mention that our weapons detection concealed weapons detection system was delivered we had an opportunity to demo that and will be looking to utilize it very soon mr. Jones I will see that and then Miss Thompson will have it set up and we can go further with that just wanted to make that Dimension here those are all I have to report any questions Advance Auto mobile dog grooming in the texting thing is really impressive to me Eminem's just moist Sunday we can get it there was school and you know Mabel can't you know it's a shame we have to do that but I mean you know do what we got to do this one spends between figured in this is the trailer just protected and will be able to take it where it needs to go that will be their job so my understanding is you don't never the schools won't know which school is going to be in that that that is what more might walk you know so it ain't going to be able to drive tomorrow in your lies with the K-9 the goal would be for it to be a random experience of running and screaming on you would walk in and it may be there it may not could happen at different points in the day so that would be yes sir Miss Jones that's all I have for reports and information NEX our next board meeting currently for May May 8th I'm would also like to put or have you to check and we can decide to sliders June 19th of June board meeting June 19th we will have amendments at that time I'm going to want to drink yes sir if that's agreeable next time server be any other businesses May properly come before the board I miss attacker had statement today not playing that. way to make a proposal this basically just kind of just background as I talk to Mister how do you meeting Thursday how good is just the beginning of things that we're going to face in the school system I'm always an advocate and bring more people to the table having more voices because I think it's only going to make us stronger 1501 Lebanon Tennessee population was 1900 people that's when the board was formed at 11 population today is 4200 so we've grown quite a bit I'm out of 42000 circuit diagram out of all the school system's 99.9% of them have more than three board members there's only one other school system that's a really really small school district and they're mostly don't wear that allows their constituents to be able to go and advocate for different things I like it says Lebanon special is only size with three board members live in these I think I think we need more parent involvement or diversity fraud of representation and more accountability because there's a lot of things that we're going to face that we've never faced before and I think communication is the key and I think we need to be United with that I don't care if you Republican Democrat independent or whatever that is I think we need to talk together and we need to listen more to parents teachers to teach a retention can be a lot harder because you're asking teachers to face things that they've never faced before I know my wife this year's teaching a Metro and you know we're right next to Metro we're not void of anything else that they have in Nashville it's just by God's grace sometimes they were protected and I think it's going to be very very important as a board you know we look at our strategic plan and growth is a big thing but the only thing that hasn't Grove and snatching a wanted everything else is going to even have assistant principals when we started I'm sure the central office was only a handful of people and now we probably have over 30 so everything in our system has grown nothing has stayed the same except the board right here oh and I left this for 14 years ago I mean the same two gentlemen were on it so we don't have a lot of change in her for there's nothing wrong with that and that's the voters discretion but I really feel that we need to have more options and we need to expand its Banning to Lebanon Special School District board from Three Men and A 2-3 Zone and two at-large will allow for us to have some change in the board when it was necessary this is not surprised to know that lot of people who know our board members are board meetings are open and I mean I like to see it's advertised more to the parents to let them know you're welcome to come and listen because like Maria back there it was an email that she sent me that I brought to you come that started all that and we open we listen to people that's when we can grow we can learn and Levin is not in a bar any more work we're just like everybody else and I think that's very important to look at I would like to look I know the legislature is coming up May 4th is Wesley when they're going to convene I would like to put in something that we look to stagger it when we had five board members and no mr. Jones for you running again your turn will be up next year and I'm Mark and my time will be up actually in 2026 he knew because we just have four-year terms now we used to have six years terms but the board agreed to go to four-year terms because honestly six years is a long time and I appreciate you all doing that and bring you that and legally we can't really have a quorum if one of us are gone so basically if one of us was gone and I didn't like it and you did it basically kill the whole meeting in that me and the foreman SS you're right we have percentage but you basically could if we had five members we could have four of them and still have a meeting and still have your say on the saying if something looks like you didn't like anything that I said you could just vote against me that whole time and be one vote would negate the other vote work we had five minutes ago if we did agree had to happen before its previously when I was on the board we had two members passed away and that's when we appointed you mark glad to be on the board so I'm going to forward bias with us working together and I think it's very important that we do work today and that's another thing in contention I think board meetings all it takes for us being a special school district there's not a lot of Hoops to jump through because we are Special School District be done this in the past the last time if you're on the county or city school board you have to go to the Commissioners or of the city council all we have to do is simply a private act that proposes the changes that works at work session we could cause a special board meeting before the end of month what's this day just needs to drop the private Act how we could seek to Tammy who's head of the election commission about zones and then we presented to Mark Cody and the state state senator rap Dark Void and it would be due by then that's all up I just wanted to present that and I wanted a Miss Polly to come up here and just kind of talked to that she ran last time I miss polita would you come just give us a few workplace good afternoon to the director into the Board of Education Personnel into all that I hear today in the government body is a blessing to be here today and thank you mr. Packer for asking me to come. one and I ran because of what we meeting about today I am a native of Lebanon Tennessee and it is my desire to see Lebanon City and that our state would be the best thing we can be in any special in Avery County we are in need of more board members I believe because we need to stay fresh I believe that and it's not anything to do with the three board members that are here and I want to commend you all for doing the work that you've been doing all of these years but we do all do know that you're coming in from different areas of the of this life they're coming from many cities many states and people come into our city and there are used to certain ways of education and we want be able to make sure that the board is this school system is the best that they can be and I would love to see a I am expansion of the number of persons because what you just explain is very real none of us knows when we'll leave this place but definitely we need someone that's going to be there to still make sure the progress continues I am I believe that different voices like mine's is very and I just believe that we have to invest that greatly in our teachers and the students and certainly the parents need to be more involved with our students coming up going to school parents they are you know just they are but it's different now and I sometimes have students that don't have the parents to carry enough but if they don't have enough certainly they should have the administration to care if you want to give them the very best that we can and I just think the expansion will be wonderful and I do thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to be able to express that thank you eat in discussion I was give you all the time so I can come together 80000 kids and I got nine board members Wilson County Jail you know I'm just looking at the numbers is what I'm looking at nothing to get what you're saying but you know Butler County 6750 Boardman Road so you know and I know the population is growing here like crazy and it has wrong but you know it. I'm fine I was going to be gone another you probably about long you never know you know cuz I've had it for board members to Dyson. let go I'll take it into consideration videos about it but Heavenly three board members Zone and then two at-large what would be what would be the reason for doing that why would you just not have zones will you could have all three could what are you if you look at the terms with 4-year terms you have to stagger it so basically you have one at-large to zoned one at large one so you have to stagger it to where you would have it to where it's good we had a large if you can like a popularity contest me and take the 3 if that's why you ask that next year we would do the 3 Zone and then we'd have to actually yeah can you meet with me at large so when I and rolled up you have one at-large that was one for two years and then one would rub it for you everything in the mix so next term would have it three zone so we would bring three Zone Denver's on that we read. run actually larger than the mayor's. So if you run for mayor Lebanon you have less voters than we actually have in we don't get paid anything so I mean that's that's consideration to and also Zone what's going on why is Democrat Republican if that area is more Democrats or more Republican or whatever independent it's going to allow for that area to be represented and that's another thing that's why I'm asking a question because it looks like if you want to do this it would be best to bring it all up in his own that way every saint has their own represent if you have three ReSound Intuit large it's things like that would complicate the whole election process to make another boy in our state because every everybody in saying someone they can vote for you see I don't tell anyone have a thousand people want to run but they don't pay anything for the school system as I do at work and I don't like a penny I've been here for 35 years and I never missed a meeting never I'm enforcement or not cuz I'm sick and but it's a lot time that I spend and board members would have spent you know what the county makes I know mechanic close to it it's a fourth highest paid School District in the state of Tennessee I know that Western counties you are not supposed to use $5,000 a year Sauron but none of us got up here because of the pay we got up here cuz of the kids kids and grandkids and kids or grandkids in school district ever since I met you unisex right now in one of the knife and then and we can I do mean I can I do a roll call vote that would allow us to move forward to try to get this in before the sessions over my vote would be actually to add two new board members is a roll call vote do you live in I'm sorry I asked for a roll call vote on this list on actually moving forward to meeting for special called meeting before the May 4th election legislators up to injection leak I think to properly it would have to be something under some new business but even with that if it come out of of a motion first before you can take any kind of so I can say you have to make a motion even if anything's possible I did submit 10 days for fryer but I don't think it was on there that there was going to be a boat taken with discussion this morning I may be wrong but I mean that's why are we so we could make a boat to meet again in a special session if you're talking about a boat can only happen if there's a proceeding motion you can't just I want to do a bold you got to have a motion Under The Rules of Order that we follow so you got to have a proper motion and then second supposed to be discussion and then there's supposed to be a vote on that on a conference call meeting before the next meeting so that could be decided between the board but the only thing you can discuss is one is what is down that agenda for that one topic and an inspector called me can't vote on anything that works at work session it would only be there wouldn't be any narrative from the public it would just be the board working on something so but it would be advertised and open to the public that just couldn't be any commentary from the public I just like to be known that I would be for this it's up to you gentlemen if it's something you want to continue or not I'll leave it up to you I'm not drinking turn how about that it's my first concern is safety of these kids in the school system safety of our teachers are Style in the age of krth the best that we can do and I think we're doing that this is trying time y'all would never know what's going to happen shooting tonight it scares me to death I'm a nervous wreck about it and I'm sure y'all are two we don't never know what's going to happen and now it's just a Jones opinion only I think we need to really concentrate on the important things with that is the important thing right now instead of Warren my opinion only ornament board members and stuff back up to the point that you want to pay me the board members to get them to run a person on the board what if we're to have a lawyer what if we'd had some when he was a police officer on the board who would have this back or teacher or anybody that has been in education I don't know if you'll have education background but I don't I'm a business major I mean to have those people on the pool work to give us to see how you know that before because I might be a better you know this is a good example a good person that would be on the board way to change the direction the system is Johnny Peyton he's not with us any longer she was a sweet lady. She was in the school system there's no doubt in my mind she would have implemented a lot of things that we've been good for the teachers of the students in the system if but that that didn't happen so we can't stay the what-ifs because we don't know and you're right safety is a concern that's why I want a fleece officer for somebody with these backgrounds maybe they might be interested we have easier. that's the thing you're saying the what is we can't look at it we have to look future and if everything is growing in our system but this board there's only two things its power and control and that has nothing to do with me because I want what's best for the system I don't want I get this going to be a status quo let's just make it Heineken and I think that. I think you are good board member I think you concerned about this goes I think it concerns about the kids staffs and everybody here at your main concern. and doing what's right like it like it is I'm old school. I don't know that I'm in doing this a long time in I'm just not for Joe almost to be on its way down and just anxiety is I'm just not for it right at the current time I just don't think our timing is right for that to be song got to be dealing with the current time in the future yes maybe so but you know that's my opinion and I'm in with your opinion what we do my opinion I don't want tripping I think things have been smooth ever since I've been on the board I think we've got excellent school system staff I'm not saying no to it I would like to think about it more than a week I think this is so you know I think May 4th is that you know that's too quick because I mean I just want some more time to think about this was the same presentation I gave two years ago so I mean it's not all I got is a something crashed dismiss at the same time that we changed our terms that's it so are you and yes or no more white well I mean we're not. I know but I mean are you far that's why I'm saying that's present enough and I'm not a friend you know no I'm sorry and I appreciate your hard work cuz I know it took time to put that stuff together and I have no hard feelings against you for that I don't I know you probably do me I know you go to website and I'm worried about safety purposes and all this kind of stuff that's that's what worries me and you and things don't change we will get no pictures I mean he told me that he went there several tenants meaning Anodyne counseling 15 superintendents resign quit since January 4th because the pressure of the day when you put on do you know and you know I just think we got so much going on right now is my opinion that I think we need to get a lot of stuff taken care of and you know we don't want Toby to come back we don't want any maybe some other kind of disease come back I'm sure that will be you know that's the first I've ever dealt with but not night the way he is running good and I don't think we've got any problems and you know move remove me as chairman y'all can do that I'm in chairman 29 years and I'll be glad to give it to someone else do I know you don't so let me talk to Brian understand understand okay that's all I got to say so if we don't have any other father discussion will be drunk
